Living With Great Style

a pop of color: black

Black walls have been popping up in homes for years now. When I first started noticing them becoming popular was after Jenna Lyons was featured in Domino Magazine in 2008. I’ve always been tempted to paint a room black but have never had the full courage to do so. I think if it is done right it can be amazing, I think I’m just waiting for the right space.

Have you pulled the trigger and painted a room in your home black? Or would you ever paint a room all black? Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

I sure have! We painted our bedroom black in our new place. When the first strokes of gloopy black paint went onto the wall, I was like 'eeeeek!' but about ten minutes in I saw the transformation taking place and began to love it. I say go for it – the results are brilliant!

I am in the process of painting all my interior doors and window cassings black- love love the look and would definitely paint a room black, if I had one- maybe a powder room etc.

Am seriously considering painting my bedroom black – the drama it creates is just amazing and I've had a taste of it by painting my dining room dark grey. Lush inspiration pics and Jenna Lyons home is still a favourite after all this time! x

Great finds – this really is a nice pop of color even though it's black. So much more dimension!

i'm definitely a huge fan of black accents…it's such a classic color and i love it paired with white! never considered a black wall until now though..i love it!

  • Melissa Cahoon says:

It's definitely growing on me, I'd have to try accents before going full-on. But the bathroom and dining room pictures above have me thinking I'd love it!

  • Megan says:

I definitely live this look. It can be glamorous when paired with gold or casual when accented with simple creams and neutrals. So chic either way!

I saw it done in a bedroom I wrote about by a Minneapolis salon owner. Black walls, white edging, white bedding. Great drama. The closest I've come is deep purple.

You have a great aesthetic. These pictures are divine. I especially love the first.

No, I don't think I would have the courage to do it. I love white, right rooms too much to darken them in anyway — even though i really do love these rooms.

gorgeously curated images! i'm a big fan of black paint, but i don't think i would ever do a full room…maybe just an accent wall or two.

  • With Style and Grace says:

Surprisingly, I'm liking the black walls. I never would have thought of doing black, but I'm liking to look/feel. I say go for it!

  • Kate {domestikatedlife} says:

I painted my bedroom wall a navy color, because I was too scared to go black — but everytime I see it now I wish I went darker, love these images!

I've been drooling over that herringbone floor in your last image for a year or two. Truly stunning. Thanks for the great post! Chic Rooms

I would love to paint my bedroom black…but since I rent, I think my landlords would have a heart attack! Maybe someday when I own my own place. Black walls, white curtains, lots of natural light — delicious!

I painted the wall behind my daughters crib black. the white crib was a strong contrast to the wall. bold colored sheets and stuffies made the space cozy.
