One Room Challenge: The BIG Reveal

I’ve been giddy with excitement to share the BIG reveal of Jackson’s new room with all of you. When Linda from Calling it Home invited to be part of this season’s One Room Challenge with House Beautiful, I knew exactly what room I wanted to design: redesigning Jackson’s bedroom from a nursery to a toddler room. It was a labor of love putting the pieces together for his room – I was my own client! I didn’t want it to look cookie cutter – I wanted to make sure it had layers, depth and texture and I couldn’t be happier with the result! It is a bedroom that shines with Jackson’s personality.

I began with the bed. I wanted a simple upholstered bed that I could spruce up with interesting textiles, pillows and linens. I began with a Helix mattress. It is divine and so easy to install – it arrived in the mail in a box! Nest step was bedding – I worked with SF based Coyuchi on putting together the perfect layered bed with their beautiful bed linens and blankets. It all began with a stripped wool blanket at the end of the bed, a simple white bedcover, and a gray striped pillow. The sheets are the softest flannel I have ever felt. A total enticement to sleep in his big boy bed!

To add dimension to the simple bed frame, I draped a stunning hand-loomed wool bedcover from Hollywood at Home. I also adorned the bed with a world map pillow by Peter Dunham Textiles – hopefully I will pass my love of travel on to Jackson!

Next, I knew I wanted the artwork to be made by Jackson. He is so happy when he is painting – especially when it’s a dance party with paint. He was fortunate to be able to create the paintings for his room at Heather Day’s studio. He is so proud of his paintings and points it out to anyone entering his room.

Moving to the wall color – I also chose Farrow & Ball paint in All White. Jackson’s room is darker than the rest of our apartment and the white has brightened the room considerably. I also lightened the room with an off-white and slate gray rug by The Mine. I added a table in the center of the room for creative activities, which is actually a coffee table. Jackson loves to read his books, draw, and of course play with his trucks on this table! I added a small stool and two pillows from Hollywood at Home to create seating for Jackson and his friends.

The lighting update in the room transformed the space in a major way! The overhead lighting reminds Jackson of a helicopter and the globe and brass bedside lamp creates a soft glow to read books by prior to bedtime! I couldn’t be happier with all of my lighting choices from Hayneedle.

Finally, the pom-pom basket from Pehr Design is perfect to store all of Jackson’s basketballs. I had a custom basketball hoop installed on the wall. The recycled barn wood blends perfectly with the grey and blue tones of the room. And I am crazy about the pendants by McGee & Co. They add a festive spirit to the room. The small shelves next to the closet house a few heirlooms – old books, Jackson’s favorite stuffed animals, and his silhouette from a few years ago. Honestly, what makes me happiest about this room is that it is the perfect reflection of Jackson!

I love that little boy’s room, and wish we could do something like that for our little one – sadly he is a whirlwind of creativity, leaving a trail of messy destruction behind him 🙂
